PALMETTO MAYOR SHIRLEY GROOVER BRYANT ANNOUNCES RE-ELECTION BID Continuing the effort to preserve Palmetto’s past and sustain Palmetto’s future
PALMETTO, FL – Palmetto Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant today announced her bid for re-election as Mayor of the City of Palmetto, Florida. The office is non-partisan and serves a four-year term, the current term expires with the election for a new term in November 2020.
“I have been honored to serve the citizens of the City of Palmetto as a previous member of the City Council and as Mayor,” said Mayor Bryant. “We have accomplished a great deal in the last 11 years to bring Palmetto forward and re-develop the City of Palmetto for the benefit of all of the City’s residents.” “There is much more work to be done, and I wish to continue the effort to give the City of Palmetto’s residents the hometown they want and deserve.”
“We must continue to leverage technology and outside grant funding to improve and expand the City’s infrastructure and amenities so we can continue to accommodate the tremendous growth that we have seen in the City of Palmetto and Manatee County overall while minimizing costs and the tax impact on the City’s residents.”
Mayor Bryant has overseen the redevelopment of the City’s parks and recreation facilities, and the expansion of business grant funding and redevelopment plans for its commercial core, including the recent plans to revitalize Palmetto’s downtown district, all while preserving the small-town character and history of Palmetto. Mayor Bryant has spearheaded the efforts to modernize the City’s operations and improve energy efficiency throughout the city facilities. City Hall received increased storm resistance enhancements with the installation of new windows and roofing imrpovements. The replacement of the current outdated Police Department Building, will be a huge leap forward as to storm resistant city facilities.
As with the newly completed Hydrant Park, Mayor Bryant plans to move forward one by one to upgrade the outdated city parks. As some areas have received new infrastructure with sidewalks and then paving, the focus continues to be on older sections for infrasture improvements such as reuse lines, paving, etc. Currently given the new reuse lines that have been installed, the city has approximately 92% coverage for reuse availability.
Shirley Groover Bryant is a native of Palmetto, Florida and is a graduate of Palmetto High School, Manatee Community College and Florida Southern College. Mayor Bryant worked for fifteen years at the Manatee County Property Appraiser’s Office as the Senior Staff Accountant and Community and Employee Affairs Coordinator and has served as the Chief Financial Officer for Manatee School for the Arts, a public charter school in Palmetto. Mayor Bryant served as the Ward 2 representative on the City of Palmetto City Council from 1993 to 2004 and was elected to a four-year term as Mayor of the City of Palmetto on November 4, 2008, taking office on November 17, 2008 and is currently in her third term as Mayor of the City of Palmetto.
